Today, January 6, is officially the last day of Christmas, or if you like the song ’12 Days of Christmas’ this would be the time you’d be singing about the Twelve Drummers Drumming. Today is also known as the Feast of the Epiphany when the Magi followed the star in the east that led them to Jesus. It’s a good thing Jesus wasn’t born in Newfoundland otherwise the Magi would be some spell trying to find him in this snowstorm that’s happening right now! No worries about seeing any stars in the sky; wouldn’t find him til next Christmas.
For many people Christmas is over on Boxing Day or New Years. I can certainly understand their desire to take down trees and decorations because after a while the tree starts to look a little raggedy and ornaments and gilguys are gathering up the dust. What’s a “gilguy” you ask? Well, it’s a word Dad would always use to describe ornaments, trinkets, little showy decorative things that don’t really have a name. The Dictionary of Newfoundland gives it two spellings “gilguy” and “gilgoy” and defines it as gaudy trinket or showy attire, also known as a gewgaw. Whatever you call it, my gilguys don’t come down until AFTER January 6th. Is it because we spent so much time and effort preparing and decorating for Christmas and all the cheer it brings that we hate to see it go? Or maybe because we spent so much time and effort preparing and decorating for Christmas that we hate to face all the work in putting it all away and we’re just delaying the inevitable. Who knows but we’ll have every light blooming, candle lit and bulb flickering tonight in Torbay on this last day of Christmas.
Anyhoo, here’s a few snaps from this past Fall leading up to Winter and Christmas that I hope you enjoy on this cold, blustery day!
If you get a chance to visit Dildo you should consider staying at Pretty’s Ocean View Boathouse. What a spot! It sits at the halfway point between the Dildo Brewery and the Dildo Dory Grill, just minutes walking distance to each!
I can’t believe that it’s been almost three years since I posted by first blog. Hundreds of pictures and 21 blogs later I thank each and every one of you who took the time to read, comment, share and like my snaps. I was a little shy about doing it at first and I still get a little nervous when I’m about to hit the “Publish” button but sharing my pictures with you makes it worthwhile. All my posts are available to read. You just need to scroll to the end of the current blog and you’ll see previous posts!
Hope you enjoyed my snaps today. Wishing everyone a healthy and happy New Year!
